She holds a PhD in Mathematics, area of specialization in semigroups - algebra, completed at the University of Essex, UK. She is a professor in the Department of Mathematics, School of Sciences and Technology, University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Vila Real, Portugal. She is a collaborating member of the UTAD/CIDTFF Science and Technology Didactics Laboratory, University of Aveiro and an integrated member of the CMAT-UTAD, UTAD's pole of the CMAT Mathematics Research Centre, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal.
