Education of Liberty. A New approach for Understanding the Value-education Relationship un a Plural and Uncertain Context, Such as the Current One

Abstract

The crisis-change-globalization crisis horizon in which the world is found today makes the subject of values in education and its effect on the so called “value based education” grow on importance. The change of times we live in, justifies the concerns for the topic, but this global context is clearly marked by two elements that must be taken into consideration for the planning of specific programs for moral education, and those pertinent to the study subject. These two elements are plurality and uncertainty. In a context such as this, it is necessary to seek out new focus points for research and formation on value based subjects that relate to today’s human subject. A philosophical distinction that can help on this quest is the one made by Zubri and Aranguren between “moral as content” and “moral as structure”.  A person can live on the sidelines of the moral contents of his society, but no human being can avoid being structurally moral. The proposal made in this article consists of a moral education tailored for times of uncertainty and plurality, such as those in which we live in, must be  a proposal based in “moral a structure”, and not in “moral as content” as many programs are.
