Principals Leadership Practices and Learning Results. Toward Concepts Capable
of Guiding Empirical Investigation
 
Abstract
 

This article presents and discusses several conceptualizations for the subject of principals leadership, from the styles of leadership to the managerial practices; always looking for their relationship to the impact of educational quality. It is theorized that, regardless of theoretical options, or underlying ideologies, the debate over “principals styles” can also be analyzed as the prioritization of specific subjects of management labor. At the same time, the recent taxonomical managerial practices of K. Leithwood et al. is presented, and it’s potential for guiding empirical investigations valued; specially in respect of the association between effective principals practices and the resulting learning of students. Finally the importance of these concepts for the advancement of an investigative agenda is shown. Such an investigation could prove strategic for the definition of policies regarding the principals leadership.
