As school principals have key role in school success, the challenges and problems faced by novice school principals have become an increasing research topic world wide. In spite of the bulk of research produced in the last three decades, there has not been published reviews devoted to analyze the state of research. The purpose of this work was to analyze the state of research on novice principals as well as the situation of research on principalship in Mexico. The present work is part of the international network, International Study of Principal Preparation.
